Aims and Scope

Aquatic Invasions is an open access, peer-reviewed international journal focusing on biological invasions in both inland and coastal waters of Europe, North America and other regions. It was established in 2006 as initiative of the International Association of Theoretical and Applied Limnology (SIL) Working Group on Aquatic Invasive Species (WGAIS) with start-up funding from the European Commission Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development Integrated Project ALARM and continued with this support until the end of 2008. The journal provides authors with their rights protection concerning primary geo-referenced records, biological monitoring and surveys as well as timely publication of reports concerning first alien species records. This contributes to rapid information dissemination, risk assessment procedures and early warning systems on aquatic invasive species (AIS) (see report on early warning services of Aquatic Invasions at European Commission website). Furthermore, Aquatic Invasions publishes technical reports on new management technologies of invasive species and also the proceedings of relevant international meetings.

One of the key benefits of the open access journal Aquatic Invasions is the timely and readily available publication of essential primary scientific information, which feeds into AIS management efforts and informs decision and policy making processes. This journal may also contribute to timely and coordinated eradication efforts of newly-found AIS. The fast and comprehensive peer review process of manuscripts serves as an effective quality control mechanism.

Aquatic Invasions is also devoted to bridging the gap between scientific research and the use of science in decision-making, regulation and management in the area of introduction of invasive species and biodiversity conservation. The journal provides a forum for professionals involved in research and management of aquatic invasive species, including a focus on the following:

• Advances in species identification
• Patterns of species dispersal, including range extensions with global change
• Population dynamics
• Ecological and evolutionary impacts
• Prediction of new invasions
• Early detection and early warning
• Ecological risk assessment
• Advances in management of invasive species

Open Access policy

The Open Access policy of Aquatic Invasions means that authors retain the copyright of their articles, which can be copied, downloaded and freely distributed within society. The primary advantage of Open Access journals is that the entire content is freely available to users everywhere (see more information on Open Access journals in Wikipedia ). During 2006-2008 the cost of publication of Aquatic Invasions was covered mainly by the European Commission Integrated Project ALARM (for current initiatives of European Commission in access to scientific information see European Commission website, The Study of Open Access Publishing (SOAPs) and Publishing and the Ecology of European Research (PEER) projects). Beginning in January 2009, Aquatic Invasions applies a new funding model, by charging authors for processing of their manuscripts and by seeking additional funding from relevant organizations in order to support students, retired scientists, scientists from low income countries, and also to support the submission of datasets with species records (information on page charges and on applications for support can be found at "Author Guidelines" web page). See more information on funding models of Open Access journals at the Nordic Open Access Publishing web site.
